Corona Treatment

Also known as “air plasma treatment,” corona treatment is a surface modification process in which low-temperature corona discharge plasma is used to change the properties of a surface. The corona plasma itself is generated by applying high voltage to a special electrode; plasma forms at the sharp tip of the electrode. In many corona treatment applications, a linear array of electrodes is used to create a curtain of corona plasma. While nearly any material can have its surface energy changed via corona treatment, including cloth and paper, the process is most often applied to plastic materials. Many common plastics, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are chemically inert, with nonporous surfaces with low surface tension. This makes them unreceptive to bonding with inks, coatings, and adhesives; corona treatment modifies these surfaces to improve adhesion. Corona treatment is a safe, economical, and fast process. Multiple surfaces and complex or difficult parts can be effectively treated in a single pass.
