Like all safes, floor safes are designed to protect their contents from theft, loss, and damage. However, floor safes—also called in-floor safes or in the floor safes—have the added advantage of stealth, as they are made to be built into the floor of a room. This combination of strong, secure storage and a discreet profile make floor safes a common, popular choice for both homes and businesses. For maximum safety and concealment, it is often necessary for a floor safe to be surrounded by concrete on five sides, the sixth being left free to allow the safe door to open. This usually necessitates that the safe be put in position while concrete is poured in around it. When installed properly, an in-floor safe in dried concrete can be almost impossible to detect and even harder to gain unauthorized access to. ] Floor safes are, of course, available in a range of sizes to meet different needs. In general, they include all the same features as an above-ground safe, such as heavy steel walls and doors, complex interior locking mechanisms, and combination or electronic locks. In the floor safes also often include a flat, lighter-duty steel plate to cover the door and lock, making them easier to disguise and safe to step on. It is worth noting that, while many floor safes are fire proof, the seals around their doors are not always waterproof. In the unfortunate event of a fire, water from fire hoses or sprinkler systems could potentially enter through the space around the door and floor the interior cavity.
