Also known as heat shrinkable tubing, heat shrink tubing is a specialized type of plastic tube used to insulate wires. Heat shrink tubing provides abrasion resistance and environmental protection for wire conductors, connections, terminals, and joints, and can be used to repair damaged insulation on wires or to bundle multiple wires together. Heat shrink tubing in action. Heat shrink tubing is usually made from nylon or polyolefin. These materials shrink radially, but not longitudinally, allowing the tubing to tightly encapsulate the wire without losing length. The thickness of heat shrink tubing can vary greatly depending on the application, from almost microscopically thin and flexible to thick and rigid.
