Hose Couplings

A hose coupling is a connector at the end of a length of hose, used to connect, or “couple,” said hose to another hose, a tap or spigot, or a hose appliance, such as a garden sprinkler. Usually made of plastics, such as polypropylene, or steel, aluminum, or other rust- and corrosion-resistant metals, hose couplings are used in countless industries and applications. Hose couplings are readily available in all standard imperial and metric sizes. Some manufacturers may also offer custom sizing for unique customer applications. There are numerous different styles and configurations of hose couplings. They may utilize “male,” “female,” or “sexless” connection points to couple to other devices. Examples of hose coupling styles include: cam and groove, ground joint, bayonet, quarter turn, express, push fit, symmetrical clutch, guillemin, quick connect/disconnect, non-tapered, NST (National Standard Thread), expansion ring, swaged, and internally expanded. A hose coupling may or may not include a gasket to provide a air- or watertight connection between the hose and whatever it is connected to. Perhaps the most well known use for a hose coupling is the connection of a garden hose to a spigot. Hose couplings may also be used in a pneumatic or hydraulic system, for water or air/compressed hoses, in petroleum, chemical, or steam applications, for fire hydrant connections, to move fuel or oil, and in various high pressure applications.
